Kevlar is used in bullet-proof vests and high performance sails like those used in America's Cup races. Also sails for wind surfing. Some canoes and tennis rackets also uses Kevlar. Puncture resistant tires. Ropes used on the Mars Pathfinder. Some ski helmets. NHL hockey helmets. Gloves. Bikes and trampolines.

Kevlar is a condensation polymer of the aramid type. It is not made of graphite. Instead, "Kevlar is synthesised from the monomers 1,4-phenyl-diamine (para-phenylenediamine) and terephthaloyl chloride in condensation reaction giving hydrochloric acid as byproduct. The result is a liquid-crystalline behaviour and mechanical drawing causing the polymer chains to orientate in the direction of the fiber." (1)

See more of chemical structure which includes a benzene ring and lot of hydrogen bonds. It has a very strong tensile strength, higher than steel, so it is used in bulletproof vests and the like.

Kevlar is basically a weave of carbon (graphite) fibers. Kevlar is used mainly in bullet-proof vests because it can withstand high velocity impacts without breaking apart. Kevlar is light and strong (high tensile strength). Kevlar can be woven into fabrics or it can be molded into stiff shapes (like car bodies). Kevlar is also used in high tech equipment, exotic race cars, exotic bicycles, skis and snowboards, and armor against various projectiles (bullets and sharpnel) inside vehicles, either as a blanket or as a stiff plate armor. Pretty much anything that requires a light and strong material (that would replace steel or metal alloys) could use Kevlar - especially if it is expensive.

Police bullet-proof vests. Body armor for soldiers in Iraq. And an interesting fabric garment that you're probably wearing about now.
