i would like to know if in australia to get broadband (better if adsl2) you have to pay also telephone line or you just need to activate it and not pay the monthly fees. In italy we do not have to pay the monthly fees if we just want adsl.

adsl need just a data line, not a voice. I asked if it's possible to have adsl without paying telestra or optus for the phone line.

Some telcos are advertising 'Never pay line rental again', but to me this is just a good advertising gimmick, because instead of paying separate charges for your voice calls and line rental, they are giving you a package deal which includes both, and then they give you an option of what type of ADSL plan you want attached. So, basically the short answer is...No.
Your best bet would be to find the best deal for your dollar (lire). I use Primus, as they gave me what I wanted at a cheaper rate than both Telstra and Optus could do.

There are a number of options available to you. The easiest would be if you live in a Virgin Media cabled area, but as not every area in the UK is cabled you might not be able to do this. A good secondary option if you are dead set against having a phone line installed (you can get pretty decent pricing on this as a package by the way) is to go with something like 3's MiFi Mobile broadband solution. It is more expensive but you get mobile broadband with a Huawei E585 Wireless Modem which allows you to share the mobile broadband connection as a standard router would. It is actually rather good.

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

The first thing they ask you when you want to sign up for adsl or adsl2 is your phone number and which company you are with. Unless you have an active phone number at your place, you cannot have adsl. I know Telstra is not the best when it comes to prices and speed, but the trouble you get in connecting to other providers is equally frustrating in Sydney.
