Yeah it's kinda like saying "rabbit rabbit" or, since a rabbit is also called a hare, "bunny hare." Now how dumb (but somewhat cute) does that sound?
Kinda like "Puppy Dog" and "Kitty Cat" or "Soda Pop"

Also "sahara" is the Arabic word for desert, so when you say "Sahara Desert" you are basically saying "Desert Desert."

I think a 'bunny rabbit' is just a cute term for rabbit.
Like when people see a gorgeous fully grown dog, some people say "Who's a cute little puppy".

bunny rabbit refers to a younger version of rabbit
also small children are tuaght that bunnies and rabbits are the same thing, so they associate the names together. Also, because non-enfants say "bunny rabbit" and the enfants hear it, they just repeat because that is what they do best

You make a good point. It's redundant.

Now let's lobby Washington to make it a law.

They can enforce the law by creating "grammar police", maybe they'll pick you to head up the organization.

It's just a cutesy little kiddie phrase that got adopted into "normal" speech. It does sound kinda silly, though.
