I am wondering if I should go see a Gyno. I have been there once to get on birth control but they only did a pelvic exam, not a thorough one. I am not sexually active or anything like that but I have read that you should have a complete exam by the time you are 15 and I am 16. If I were to have a complete exam what should I expect??
--Thanks

You should go every year if you are sexually active or 16 years old or over.

The exam will consist of a pelvic exam where you will lay back with your feet in stirrups. The doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina and exam the tissue and cervix. He or she will also take a cell scraping called a Pap smear which will be used to detect any cellular abnormalities in the cervical cells. After that the doctor will remove the speculum and insert one or two fingers into your vagina and use the other hand to press down on your abdomen. This is to check the size and shape of your uterus. After that you are pretty much done. It usually takes about 15 minutes.

If they did a pelvic exam, it was a thorough exam. A complete exam would include, checking your breasts, inserting a finger in the vagina and pressing around the ovaries and uterus, at an older age, a finger would be inserted in the anus as well. The doctor will insert an instrument in the vagina and look inside with a light. That's about it, uncomfortable and a little awkward, but should not be painful. If you experience pain during the exam, you would want to tell the doctor about that and where and when did you feel the pain.

I work for an gyno and we normal say around 18 or before if sexually active. I just had my first about a year ago, and people make it sound more horrible then what it is. If you already have experianced a pelvic exam, then you have nothing to worry about.

No. I've talked to mine about all of this and basically she said that as long as you aren't sexually active and nothing is strange you really don't have to worry about it. Although I'm sure it couldn't be a bad thing for you to do. A little uncomfy, but it is just one of those crappy parts of life that girls get to go through.
