I tip 18 to 20% for good service and personally I think anyone who tips less than 15% should think about how hard a server works and those who don't tip shouldn't go out to eat at all.

we servers appreciate you very much, along with everyone else who feels the same way you do. It makes our job worthwhile, not b/c we are so much getting the money but b/c of the respect and appreciation that you give us. Thank you for doing to others as you want others to do to you. Some of us work very hard at our job and really do want to give you an amazing time and relaxing experience.

Good service, 20% and round up to the next dollar. If it's a large amount and nearing a $5. mark, then we'll round to the next $5.

Great service, 25% or more, and round up as above.

Fantastic service, depends on circumstances, but 25% or a lot more, rounded up as above.

Average service, 15 to 18% often rounded up.

Poor service, 10 to 15%, don't usually round up, and I tell them why they didn't get the 15 to 20% I normally tip. Depends on the circumstances. If we're out with friends, we won't make much of it, but will tip less than normal if it's put on our credit card, then I'll sometimes leave a note because I think they NEED to know WHY.

Very bad service, I call the manager, give the complete explanation, and we usually get the meal free plus a coupon for another free meal. We usually go to the same few restaurants, so they know we're pretty good tippers and won't complain without a very good reason.

We usually tip our regular servers at the high end, or round up more.

At a Dunkin' Donuts I used to go to regularly before they took out the counter and booths, I used to tip $1. whether I got a biscuit or bagel or doughnut with my coffee, or even if I just got coffee alone. Needless to say, the service was always excellent!

I generally tip 20%, although in the rare case of unusually poor service I have been known to for go the tip if eating at a buffet, but as I said it is very rare! I do know how hard it is to be a server!!!

I always leave at least 20%. Service doesn't matter. But the better service I get, the more I leave. We've been known to leave a $100 tip on a $150 to $200 bill. We appreciate really good service. I hope all the people who wrote about their tip depending on the entire dining experience read this. They all say if the service isn't perfect they leave less. So, what do you think their excuse is when the service is flawless? People knit pick because they are cheap.

Being in the industry myself, I know how hard my servers work. That is why I tip heavy for good service. Never less than 25%, and on occasion I have tipped above 100%. You are correct in that the standard expected tip is between 18 and 20%. As far as those who choose not to tip...they need to rent Waiting, it will open they eyes!! All kidding aside, there are very few people who actually stiff servers and quite a few who have NO clue how to tip.

I tip 20% at least. If the service is good I will tip 30%. But, I'm a waitress so I know how bad most people tip.

haha! you must be (or used to be) a server....

the tip i give is completely based upon the server's performance. servers SHOULD work hard, but lots don't... and i can tell. if i see a server working 5+ tables, i'll give them some slack... but when they've only got two tables and my water glass hasn't been refilled once and my dirty soup bowl is still at the table by dessert time, tipping next to nothing makes sense. i think servers should should earn their tip. just cuz they took my order and served my food doesn't mean they should be entitled to 15-20% of the bill. no way. when i have a really exceptional server, however, i always tip them upwards of 30% because i feel that they actually deserved it.
