I've only just seen Pirates of the Carribean 1: yeah way behind the times, I never go to the cinema or even rent videos. Was just wondering if films with trained monkeys are affecting the demand for such pets. I mean, they really aren't good pets to own, and it just isn't appropriate for animals like that to live in a normal family environment, and in most cases must be confusing for them to say the least! So what's the deal?

TV TOTALLY influences this! The same thing happens with other animals. For instance, black pugs became instantly popular after Men In Black. To the point that there is a website (www.frankthepug.com I believe) that reminds people these dogs are NOT like the one shown in the movie and that they have "issues" as any breed does. Monkeys had a run several years ago when Marcel was on Friends.

Movies show only the positive side of such animals. We don't see them crapping on the furniture or tearing the house apart or going to the vet with major problems. We just see incredibly cute, ungodly well-trained animals that have been given cut after cut after cut to get it right and look perfect.

I say if it can wear a diaper, itll make a great pet for someone, just not me. Didnt Paris Hilton have one, or want one? And more than Pirates, i blame friends for the monkey craze.

I don't know. It is crazy! They are not alive to be pets. Some animals are to be pets and some are not. I think monkeys being pets is rather cruel.

my friends carolyn and charles had a spider monkey which wore diapers around the house. unfortunately, he would take them off and jump on house guest's head and have sex with their ears. i became one of his victims. it only a split second. very gross. they ended up giving him to carolyn's grandmother (?) who claimed she donated him to the zoo.

not the kind of pet you'd want for your kids. and it's really sad when the pets become unwanted.
