Use the Hosts File...

below is a tutorial on how to block websites from opening...

There are different ways..

Block, Restrict access to a Website, Page. Prevent it from Opening.

You can either use the Content advisor from Internet explorer
Go to Internet Explorer> Tools> Internet Option> Content> Enable Content Advisor.>Approved Sites tab and enter the URL of the site you want to block. Then click the "Never" button and then "ok". if You desire you an enter a password to prevent any user from disabling this service.

now the site is blocked.
------------------------------...

or add them to the restricted zone, also on Internet Explorer

1st. click "tools" on your internet toolbar
2. click the 'security' tab
3. click on the 'restricted sites' icon
4. click on 'sites' tab
5.there will be a empty bar, type in the website and click add. this will block it.

------------------------------...

Or using the HOSTS file for better blocking..

Go to your HOSTS file. It's in your Windows, system 32, drivers, etc folder.

Open HOSTS with notepad and

Add 127.0.0.1 XXXX.com under the last line where XXXX is the name of the site you are blocking.

Close HOSTS and answer yes. Reboot.

For example if you wanted to block MYSPACE.COM
the HOSTS file would now look like this:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.
#
# For example:
#
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 myspace.com

and so on..make sure that after the 127.0.0.1 you add the adress you want to block

Simply placing the undesired website in your restricted zone will not prevent total access. Adding to the restricted zone will just prevent the use of scripts, Active-X, etc.

Good luck.

You can download a Hosts file with over 30,000 blocked sites at

http://flpcnerds.com/training/Hosts.zip

make sure to extract the file to the following folder
c:\windows\
system32\
drivers\
etc\
(OPEN THE FOLDER IN THAT ORDER) Yahoo does not let me post the whole address.

Hello Dudette,

Interesting. No self control.

I have a neat hack to block it if you want to do it.

Not exactly sure what you want to do, but this should help

Goto this directory on you computer.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\et...

There is a file on there called "hosts" Open this file in Notepad.

Add an entry on the bottom something like this.

64.233.167.147 WWW.siteyouwanttoblock.com

This will redirect the site you want to goto to www.google.com

So, if little 'Johnny' goes to www.myspace.com and you want to stop him on your pc, do this entry.

64.233.167.147 www.myspace.com

Save the file and re-open your web browser.

OH, by the way, dns is cached on your computer for 1 hour. You have to reset your dns cache.

Goto Start|Run and type CMD and then press enter. A DOS window should come up. Type this EXACTLY as I have it and press enter.

ipconfig /flushdns

Otherwise you have to completely reboot your computer OR wait the 1 hour.
