Pencil manufacturing: Modern pencils are made industrially by mixing finely ground graphite and clay powders, adding water, forming long spaghetti-like strings, and firing them in a kiln. The resulting strings are dipped in oil or molten wax, which seeps into the tiny holes of the material, resulting in smoother writing. A juniper or incense-cedar plank with several long parallel grooves is cut to make something called a slat, and the graphite/clay strings are inserted into the grooves. Another grooved plank is glued on top, and the whole thing is then cut into individual pencils, which are then varnished or painted.

First of all, as you probably know it isn't really lead... it's graphite (a form of carbon) nowadays often mixed with other stuff to alter hardness, colour etc.
There are then two different methods:-
Blocks of wood have semi-circular grooves cut along them. Then either:-
1. two blocks are bonded together leaving a hole in the middle into which the lead is inserted; or more usually
2. the lead is laid in one set of grooves and another block bonded over the top
After that the blocks are cut into individual pencils and shaped, coloured, sharpened etc.

Shave it down with a Razor blade. Takes lots of time and a gentle touch but it works. Btw, pencils do not have lead in them. Pencils have graphite in them. They haven't used lead in pencils since early 1500s.

To learn that, you must read the biography of Henry David Thoreau. In particular, he owned a pencil manufacturing plant in New England. I seem to remember that he made the finest artists' drawing pencils in America. He was in the company with other family members.

Strange as it sounds, the pencil is made in two halves with a groove. The lead (graphite) is placed in the middle and the halves are glued together.

They first make holes in the wood and then put a graphite rod of suitable diameter into it. Then they cut off the extra graphite and seal the pencil

They just slide the lead right in the pre cut hole.
You should watch "Made in America" you'll be amazed at how they do things young man.

They drill a hole in the wood that is the exact diameter of the lead and then they fit it in.
