Do people have an obligation to take care of themselves as best they can to help avoid becoming a burden on their family and on society?

Of course they do as individuals they have their own health as a responsiblity and to take care of their own well being to not be a burden to anyone.

Yes of course, everyone should do what is right for their health. The problem with health as you age, is that things will go wrong even if you exercise, eat right, don't smoke, don't drink, and stay mentally alert. This is something most people don't consider when they are young. The very process of aging, destroys the body. The elderly are most in need of health care, at a time in their life that they are lest able to keep up with inflation..

No, but by the same token, their family and society are not obligated to take care of them either.
Rather than obligation, look at it as a responsibility. A person is responsible to take care of themselves insofar as they are able to.

They should, as does everything else in the animal kingdom, however some humans are beguiling enough to manipulate others to do it for them.

absolutely the only excuse for not taking care of yourself is handicap mentally or physically

the mistakes people make are only used as excuses for letting others take care of them
