A Pentium 3 should be plenty fast for XP. My guess is that you just need to upgrade your RAM. XP will load if you have only 128MB of RAM, but it won't operate very well since that is the minimum required. Right click My Computer and select properties. If you have over 333MHz, your processor is fine. You will also see how much RAM your system has here too. If it is less than 512MB buy more RAM and install it. To do this go to;

www.crucial.com

Then enter the Make and Model number of your machine and it will tell you what is compatible and what is the max your system can handle. You can order directly from them at very competitive prices.

Don't bother with ME as it is a horrible Operating System. If you still want to downgrade, try to find someone who is selling a copy of Windows 2000. You won't be able to buy these new. You will have to shop someplace like Ebay to find a copy someone is trying to sell.

Hope this is helpful.

First of all, Windows Me is not the same as Windows 2000. The latter is considered one of the best Windows versions ever released, based on the solid NT kernel (during its development it was known as Windows NT 5.0), whereas the former is more or less the DOS-based Windows 98 with some added features, access to pure MS-DOS hidden and the user interface looking similar to Windows 2000.

I'm sure you can find Windows Me on eBay. No one in their right mind would downgrade from XP to Me though. A Pentium III is more than adequate to handle Windows XP. My guess is that your problem is a lack of RAM; XP wants at least 256 MBytes of RAM to function well.

Upgrading your RAM so that your PC can handle XP is a much better option than downgrading to Windows Me.

No, ME is not 2000. ME is a joke. It's unstable and unusable. I'm speaking from personal experience, as well as someone with programming/technical knowledge.

2000 is not as great as XP (stop whining about the UI people, you can turn it off in XP), but you're at a serious disadvantage with ME.

As mentioned previously, ME is extremely unstable. Good luck if it works without crashing. More importantly, some programs written for XP/2000 won't work with ME, 98 or before. (Tech people: ME and 98 don't have Unicode support).

I agree with PDH, you need more RAM. It will probably cost a lot! Older RAM is overpriced, compared to newer ones. It's cheaper asking your friends and coworkers if they have old PC parts, and check if the RAM is compatible.

Win2000 and XP barely runs with less than 256MB. My laptop has Win2000 and 256MB. I have most services off, including MS networking, audio and printing, and it still lags. As for speed, the P3 is fast enough for browsing, especially if you turn Flash animations off.

WinME is Win98se, but they made it very incompatible with 98 by changing the driver model and adding extra junk that will interfere. Win2000 is an improved NT4.

windows xp sucks, but if you want the functionality of xp then 2000 is right for you. windows 2000 is a rare copy. and its ment for use with office comps, but there is no really big diffrence is there. but it works and u might run into sound trouble. because at times 2000 does not find the sound drivers. dependding on your hardware(u can install them seperately). if u run into this problem. just google ur name of ur comp and sound drivers (ex.hp pavilion dv 6000t sound drivers) kinda like that but in place of the hp pavilion dv 6000t put ur comps brand name in the field. but yes it is possible to find 2000. u can get them of of ebay. or go to your local computer shop. not bestbuy or walmart.

get more memory, that will speed things up.and a faster hard drive. then XP should run fine.Me and 98 are slow and buggy.

if you have enough memory. did you try to scan your drive for viruses and spy ware.those can slow your PC down to a crawl and make it run very slow.keep the spy ware programs and anti virus program updated.

hope the links help you out.
