There are several pet insurance companies that can ease the bills in an emergency situation.

Pet Care Insurance http://www.petcareinsurance.com/ and VPI http://www.petinsurance.com/ are the two most common.

If you don't want insurance, lots of vets offer payment plans. You can also get a credit card for human or animal medical expenses from http://www.carecredit.com/. Finally, there are often low-cost preventative programs offered through shelters, rescues, and pet stores.

I think there should be a "plan" that can help people (like the elderly) or people who fall on hard times to temporarily help them with animal care should their animal become ill. These people must meet a certain criteria before receiving the help and if possible make payments even if it's $5 a month if not oh well. It is not fair to say a person should not have an animal because of their income. Maybe we should tell humans "don't" have kids if you can't afford them...PLEASE! For most of these people their animals are like their children and are most likely traeted and fed very well, they just don't have the money for vet bills if their animal should get sick. I understand that there are kids that need health benefits, but maybe if these people would quit having so many kids and get an education we wouldn't have to be so negative towards helping others with a few dollars to help keep an animal from suffering.

Animal ownership is a choice not a right!

The people who can't afford to take care of their animals do not have a right to own them. The government shouldn't have to pay for their inability to provide for the animals in their care! I believe that this was once taken up with the government, and it was firmly rejected based upon pet ownership as being a choice!

There is... sort of. Many areas have certain "funds" set up. Where I live, there is the "Sadie Fund". It's a group that helps low-income people pay for spay/neuter and also helps pay for emergency care for pets when people cant afford it. A lot of rescue groups offer similar help. It's not well-advertised because people would take advantage of it, but there are places that will help. Local shelters and/or vets should be able to tell you what exists in your area.

No I understand loving a pet but if you can't afford it you shouldn't have it. It is a choice to get a pet and a big responsibility! There are so many people out there that need help, we need to help them first.
HOWEVER: I do feel Kylie Ann has a VERY GOOD point!!!!!!

ALL ANIMAL LOVERS: I LOVE ANIMALS TOO!! I HAVE A VET DIPLOMA AND EVEN WORKED IN A VET OFFICE. BUT PEOPLE DO HAVE TO COME FIRST!!

DUKEFENTON: DO YOU HAVE A HEART OF GLASS??? MEDICAID IS OUT THERE TO HELP CHILDREN THAT HAVE PARENTS THAT CAN NOT AFFORD THEIR MEDICAL CARE! THERE ARE MANY PARENTS OUT THERE THAT GO OUT AND BUST THEIR HUMPS TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING THEIR CHILD NEEDS, AND STILL CAN'T MAKE IT! AFTER YOU PAY CHILDCARE ALONE 1/2 OF YOUR $$$ IS GONE! THE PARENTS THAT SIT ON THEIR DUFF ALL DAY ~ NEED TO GET A JOB AND START HELPING THEIR CHILD!! BUT DO NOT PUNISH THE CHILDREN THAT HAVE HARD WORKING PARENTS THAT JUST NEED A HELPING HAND!!!!!

WOW GOOD QUESTION! YOU REALLY GOT PEOPLE THINKING ON THIS ONE!!! (you can see the wheels turning...lol)

only in certain cases.

for example, if someone can pay for their dog's food, spaying and neutering, regular checkups, ect... then I think there should be help financially for EMERGENCIES. considering most emergencies call for very expensive treatment most families will not be able to pay for it. since the family was able to taken on the responsibility of owning a pet and could provide proper care then I think they should receive help.

however... if you can't afford to take your dog for regular check ups and such then no, because you shouldn't have adopted the animal in the first place, they cost a lot of money and are living things, they deserve proper care, a loving home isn't enough.

GoldenDonut is right. There are insurance plans and credit lines available, although few vets I know offer payment plans to new or newer clients. However, people need to know that pets are expensive and it is irresponsible to own animals if you can't afford to keep them healthy.

There are alot of people who can't afford health insurance. It would be a damn shame if some dog had health insurance, yet a little old man couldn't buy his blood pressure or heart medication because he couldn't afford it because he had no insurance.

And who would be paying for THAT? Your taxes? There can be no insurance on irresponsibility. To keep a pet and not be able to take care of it is irresponsible.
