The original, from 1986, was very intense. C. Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer were in that one. The original "The Hitcher" was very brutal and harrowing. Rutger Hauer is the definitive madman.

But in the new one, Sean Bean plays John Ryder. Sorry, but to me, Sean Bean (AKA Boremeer from Lord of the Rings) is not that scary. What say you?

I will probably go see the movie anyway.

Rutger Hauer is the ultimate villain who actually had a need to die to stop his madness. His portrayal of the tortured killer was not to be topped and I don't think this other movie will even come close.
