What kind of stuff is it? What I do is go through it & make 3 piles: stuff you love, stuff you need, stuff you really don't need.

If the "don't need" stuff has any $ value, have a garage sale or put it up for sale on a website (i.e. craigslist or ebay) or put in boxes for donation to salvation army, goodwill, etc. (get a receipt for tax write-off).

Go through the other 2 piles.
Have you used it in the last year? If not, you've made it through all the seasons and holidays w/o it and probably won't need it, so get rid of it (sale, donate). Does it have special or sentimental meaning? (I've taken pictures of things of sentimental value to scrapbook, then pass the item along to someone else who can put it to better use). If no special meaning, get rid of it (yard sale, donation). If you get rid of it and need it in the future, could it be replaced?

If any of it is toxic, dispose of properly at the dump.

My favorite ideas for getting rid of things are as follows, I have a little booth in a local antique shop that isn't too, too fussy about things that go in it, as long as they are serviceable, usable and have a vintage look or feel to them, I sell what ever falls into that catagory. If it won't fit in with that scheme, I try and sell any usable things at a local consignment store, the rest of it goes one of several ways. I have 2 brothers, each with 6 children, and a number of people at my local church that are looking for certain items. I try and keep track, but sometimes, use this as a good excuse to call and say "I have have such and such and hate to take it to the local charity without checking with you first, can you use......blah blah blah.....". If they can, I make arrangements for them to pick it up or drop it off the next time we are near each others houses. Last ditch effort, is to take it to the local Salvation Army or Good Will Stores. They take anything usable and salable. Also, if you have old sheets, blankets, comforters or towels that are still usable, but past their prime for looks, think about your local humane society. They love clean linens of any kind, as the animals need them for their cages, cleaning up, and carrying sick animals in and around the clinics. I had a bunch of towels and linens that were either to dated or too worn to sell, but still serviceable for this purpose. I donated it to a local humane society after one of my officce mates heard me whining about what to do with all these linens before I moved (I had lots of leftover, duplicates or just plain stained, BUT CLEAN), some even with little holes, but I hated to just throw them out (wasteful, takes up space in landfills and so on). This was not only a good use, but gave them one more go around and no one needed to feel bad about tossing them once they had served their purpose one last time. If the stuff is broken, badly damaged, or beyond repair, just get rid of it, but if it is repairable, call local appliance shops, some will pick it up if it is free, and someone else can pay some little price and have a usable appliance for a rental, home or friend. Just think a little and decide what can be repurposed for you or someone else. And congratulations on clearing a space of stuff you don't want or need and thinking about what to do other than just toss it to the curb! If we all did that, we could keep from running out of landfill space sooner. And lets face it, the longer we keep them open, the smarter we are using those spaces! Good eco sense! Good luck!

I think that is up to you! If it is thing you don't want any more give it away to a need family or a shelter. If it is baby thing or stuff form your child hood or wedding put it is keepsake boxes or books.

Sort into 3 groups: Toss, Save, Give-Away.

Make a new rule for yourself that for everything new you buy, you must toss or give-away something in it's place.
