Find the first non-zero digit (7) and move the decimal point there:

0.000765 --> 7.65

Now count the number of places you moved the decimal. If you moved it left, count positive. If you moved it right (like in this example) count negative. You get -4 places.

So converted to standard (scientific notation) form:

0.000765 ---> 7.65 x 10^(-4)

(That's 10 to the -4 power = 1/10000, which makes sense).

count up how many decimal places you need until you have a number that has only 1 unit before the decimal...in this case there are 4. so 0.000765 = 7.65x10^-4
if it is 10 to the power a negative number, that means you are moving the decimal forward from the number not behind the number, hence its a smaller number than 1.

7.65 x 10^(-4) is correct but some people e.g. engineers would prefer it as 0.765 x 10^(-3) or 765 x 10^(-6)
