Being turned away by my family would be the toughest part.
But, I think I would try to see it as a challenge and an adventure.
After all, if you think about it, human beings have been homeless by todays standards for most of human history.

I would want to be in a warm climate, possibly with low humidity.
That would mean southern California. I've read that Santa Monica is a good area. The cops don't hassle the homeless too much. It would be important to try to stay as clean and well groomed as possible. That helps when panhandling. If you have fairly good health, physically and mentally, you should be able to work enough to put some money aside and rent a room or apartment. Or at least you could check in to a motel one or two days a week. Stay clean and sober and try to keep your wits about you and do not despair. Hopefully you could get off the street in a short time. I think I would spend the Winter in South Florida and the Summer on the West Coast, possibly moving from San Diego all the way up to Seattle.

It sounds crazy maybe, but there are probably some positive aspects to being homeless. I've heard that some people are homeless by choice.

Funny you ask this question. Laugh, but for years I said when I grow up I want to be homeless in New York City.

I'm a survivor, therefore I would survive if I ever became homeless.

No, I would not lose my mind, even though many view the homeless now that way. My mind would be carefree and relaxed, no stress.

How I would feel would be something I would have to wait and see, that one is a tough one to answer since I've never been homeless.

If no one took me, then I would just find my way to NYC and live.

How can some one describe an experience if they have never lived it? Sorry to end in a question, but I can't describe something I have not lived.

I've been homeless on 4 separate occassions. Nowadays, I have friends who would help me out. If I didn't have them, I would go to a shelter, but back in 1969, when I was first homeless, there wern't any shelters. The anxiety was terrible. I went to visit my mom about once a month to take a shower, but for the most part I was quite alienated from my family and they were on welfare and couldn't help me anyway.
I turned to prostitution. I'm a guy and I tried to get female customers, but there weren't any, so I had to resort to male customers. That's a raw world, and I got out of it.
I turned to drug dealing, but I'm not a businessman, and lost everything I invested. (That was a good thing, or I could have wound up in jail.)
It was very difficult to find a job without an address or phone number.
And, for a while, I had no shoes and couldn't even apply for a job.
The sense of alienation is profound. People shunned even looking at me, which does wonders for your self esteem.
It's a horrible way to live.

There are churches and shelters that assist homeless people, with the basics and even help with job search. It is a discouraging feeling, but you got to do what you have to do and move on and up and get back in the race of life.

I would goto my family, no matter what happened, I could stay with my family. If it was years in the future an somehow most of my family died. I'd check out a homeless shelter, and try to look for a job , asap.

I think I would go to everybody that I know first before I actually lived on the streets. If I had to live on the streets, I think I'd probably just end my life. I really wouldn't want to try to exist in that manner, that's why I try to help the homeless out whenever I see any, even if its just buying them a sandwich. It would sooooooooo-suck to be homeless.

God bless em.

I have thought about this before! You never know what is going to happen down the road. I would probably try to find a shelter to take me in. Failing that, I would probably try to get myself recognized as handicapped so that the "system" would take care of me--temporarily, until I could get on my feet. Failing that, maybe I would do some stupid little thing to get arrested so I could go to jail!

I doubt any of this will ever happen, but then you never know...

My Mom had an apartment building years ago. A friend of my brothers, his wife and three kids ended up living in their car. This happened due to excessive medical bills for one of their kids (the child died). They had to file bankruptcy and lost everything. Mom took them into one of the vacant apartments and let them live there rent free for a couple of months until they could get back on their feet. They turned out to be the best tenants she ever had. I hope that if that happened to me that somewhere there would be someone's Mom that would give me a hand.

The Shelter. They ARE out there. Usually, homeless people are in that condition BECAUSE of mental health or drug issues, not the other way around.

Having lived on the streets I know Its not walk in the park. Shelters suck sooo much poo poo! And if you sleep outside you get a ticket. The best way to pervent things from going wrong is to...a) have a car b) Sleep in a park or beach. San Diego is the best!
