The limb is the lowest limb on a probably 10 year old maple tree. It is broken probably 10-12 inches into the trunk going down. The tree is probably 18 inches around. I have a picture http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/5613/148/1600/782841/ice1.jpg

It is such a pretty tree. Can it be saved?

the branch no you have to cut it off it will die and stress the tree cut the limb and if you want in the spring you can trace the bark get a razor knife and lightly cut into (only removing the "dark bark")the bark at a 45 degree angle about a 1/16 from the brake this will help it heal

I believe it can be saved however it will take a little work. The limb has to cut off while taking care not to damage any more of the trunk than necessary. The area that is open after the limb is gone needs to "painted" or wrapped with a good tree cover both found at a lawn and garden shop. The work should be completed as quickly as possibly because the tree is still dormant for the winter. In the spring be sure to give the tree plenty of water for the season (spring and summer) and let nature take care of the rest. Good Luck>

First you need to make a cut and remove the limb so the crack won't get any worse. Make the first cut a few inches away from the trunk. Start from the bottom and don't cut through it. Then start another one this time from the top about half inch away from the first (further away from the 1st). As you continue, the weight will carry the rest. After the majority of the limb is gone, go back and do whatever you want with the rest. Make it as close to the trunk as possible. I hope the tree will heal by itself. Sometimes they do.

It looks survivable. There is very little chance that it will die from this, but it will be slightly disfigured for awhile. Remove the broken branch, and clean up the shredded edges the best you can. Then just leave it alone to heal itself. Do not paint or wrap it.
