The new superbattleship "Yamato", a 72,000 ton monster with 18-inch guns that could hurl a projectile 22 miles, was ordered into the last-ditch defense of Okinawa on April 7, 1945. A submarine reported her position to the U.S. carriers, and she was sunk by two hours of continuous bombing and torpedoing. Barely ten per cent of her crew of 2,488 survived.

Codebreaking told the U.S. forces about her sortie.

There were two battleships in the Yamato class that were actually produced, the Yamato and the Musashi. They were indeed the largest battleships ever built, but not as big as you have indicated, as others have already noted. Of the five battleships in that class that were planned, only two were built. The third, Shinano, was converted into an aircraft carrier while still under construction. The fourth was scrapped while 30% complete, and the fifth was never begun.

Although neither of these monsters got to slug it out with other battleships, the Yamato did get to shoot at some destroyers and escort carriers in the Battle of Samar during the Leyte landings in the Philippines. The Musashi was sunk by aircraft during the same Philippine campaign. Yamato survived that campaign only to be sunk, by aircraft as well, leading what amounted to a suicide attack to disrupt the landings on Okinawa in April, 1945.

There had been plans to build two ships of a super-Yamato class, with 20-inch guns, but they were never even begun.

Length was only slightly bigger than the Iowa class battleships, not 2-3 times! It had 18" main guns over the Iowa's 16" guns.

Yamato ... the biggest in the world at the time. Never fired a gun in anger. It was used as a decoy, to pull the US away from invading some island nearby. Then the Americans bombed it, andsank to the bottom of the sea.

There's a recent Japanese movie related to this ship:

Everything from recruitment of ensigns, trainings onboard, close-ups and details of the interior and guns, officers discussing plans, the battle scenes, until the sinking can be seen in the movie.
