I have installed the AVG antivirus and the AVG anti-spyware... I was told that they were good antivirus software... Is there anything else that I need to keep my computer protected? Previously I had norton and I think I had pretty much everything I needed for protection but since my licence expired I really dont know I need something else

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan (which you have.)
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

get Avast it offers a really solid protection against threats. It has protection against anti-spyware & anti root-kit. Using it's Web Shield the computer is protected against browser hijacks blocking access of hijacked websites. also features a heuristics engine and a Gaming Silent mode. The Mail Shield protects the computer from infected email messages, while it's Instant Messaging Shield protects the system from IM threats. It supports a lot of IM clients like Windows Live Messenger, AOL, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger and others. Another great feature is the Peer-to-Peer Shield, which scans all the files downloaded with P2P clients. Some of the supported clients are: LimeWire, Ares, DC, BitLord. Avast has a Behavioral Shield which monitors the system for any suspicious behavior, and it's Network Shield monitors the network activity in order to stop virus from infecting the system. Main Features - File System Shield Monitors all files and programs stored on the computer. - Web Shield Monitors and eliminates online threats. - Mail Shield Monitors all email activity. - P2P Shield IM Shield Monitors all downloads from P2P applications. - Behavioral Shield Monitors suspicious activity. - Gaming Silent Mode Monitors messages, pop-ups or alert threats get displayed. - Network Shield Monitors all network traffic. it is free

I us AVG along with both of these. Since every anti spyware program will find differnt things, its always good to use more tha one. But only use one anti virus.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

As well as anti-virus you'll need a good firewall, anti-spyware and anti-malware.

All can be found at the computeractive web site. Use Zone Alarm firewall, Ad-aware anti-spyware and A2 Anti-trojan / malware. All are free, just google them.

I would suggest downloading spybot its free and tends to pick up some things that my AVG doesn't.
I also have NoAdware but don't have that running in the background i just run a scan every couple of days it seems to pick up some of the more obscure cookies the others don't find.

Supposedly the best anti-everything on the market is Kaspersky Internet Security. It certainly does a good job for me, but of course it ain't free!
