I remember reading that mangos are the most eaten fruit world-wide. Not many people outside of the US have access to apples.

DIOSPYROS kaki the 'Asian persimmon'.

I always thought that a persimmon was that horribly astringent little fruit that a human being would only taste one time in their life. Those are Diospyros virginiana - a very different critter.

What I'm talking about is a fruit that looks almost exaclty like a tomato - either yellow or bright orange - and is as firm and crisp as an apple. It's not astringent (in most varieties) and tastes delicious.

The Fuyu variety is cultivated extensively in Japan and is considered by some to be the Japanese national fruit. Varieties of these are extremely popular all over Asia (especially China and Korea) - and have grown in popularity in Europe and Israel (the 'Sharon' variety).

So far, these scrumptious fruits have gained little traction in the US. I think that's about to change. A pretty good growing industry has developed in California and this year it seems that they are showing up in more markets. You can certainly find them at the local asian grocery store and some of the high variety produce markets. We are right in the season for them right now - about October to December in the states.

I just found some California grown Fuyu's yesterday - and they are marvelous!

Mango is the most consumed fruit around the world and it is called the king of fruits. It's available yearly from April to September but best pick and best price is in June and July. I was surprised myself to know that cuz I thought banana was the most consumed fruit cuz I see it as many many people's favorite fruit.

Bananas.

"Bananas are among the most widely consumed foods in the world."

It is #1 in the US.

However, this may be a trick question. This is also from wikipedia.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit)
"Many foods are botanically fruit but are treated as vegetables in cooking. These include cucurbits (e.g., squash, pumpkin, and cucumber), tomato, aubergine (eggplant), and sweet pepper, spices, such as allspice and chillies.[2] Occasionally, though rarely, a culinary "fruit" will not be a true fruit in the botanical sense. For example, rhubarb may be considered a fruit, though only the astringent petiole is edible.[7] In the commercial world, European Union rules define carrot as a fruit for the purposes of measuring the proportion of "fruit" contained in carrot jam.[8] In the culinary sense, a fruit is usually any sweet tasting plant product associated with seed(s), a vegetable is any savoury or less sweet plant product, and a nut any hard, oily, and shelled plant product."

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out much too soon. Some are rocks, many are wrong. Some of the fresh vegetables are typical right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.

Yeah, it's a tricky one. I would of went with apples at first, but then I figure that this country lives on ketchup. So, I ditto the tomatoes.
