Easily fixed. . . Tighten the belt. . .

Inspect it, make sure it isn't cracked and getting ready to fall apart on ya. Then if it is ok, one of two things. . .

(1) If it has an automatic tensioner (most modern cars have these) It may be worn, and need to be replaced.

(2) If not, you should just be able to loosen the alternator, or wherever the adjustment is, put tension on it with a pry-bar or breaker bar (depending on the set-up), and tighten the bolts.

BTW, if it is a V-Belt, dressing is ok. . . don't use dressing on a serpentine belt.

First off; What kind of belt system? One serpentine or more than one V-groove?
If it's a serpentine, there are no easy/quick or cheap fixes, replace it A.S.A.P.
If it is a V-groove you still need to replace it but these can buy you time:
-With engine running spray a slight stream of soap and water on each belt. The squealling belt will quiet down for a moment.
-Belt dressing (hardware store) will work for a few weeks.
-RC or Coca Cola will work for a few days (maybe 200 miles).

You may even just have a loose belt on your steering pump (V-groove).
Or a misaligned belt on your serpentine

Worst case:
Tensioner pulley is stuck and need replaced, serpentine belt is sliding against it creating the squeal. This can rip your belt right off if not repaired.

the serpentine belt runs particularly lots maximum on the coponents on the automobile, at the same time with your oil pump. so the smoke became probaly from the belt breaking yet once you ran the automobile for an prolonged time after the belt broke you have gotten broken the engine by using working it with out oil. additionally your timming will probally be off. i might have it towed to a gargage the place they are able to place a sparkling belt on and time it in(verify the spark plugs are firing on the splendid time) and that they could be waiting to look for any injury internally to the engine.

Replace the belt, and the tensioner. That will solve your problem. I did this on my Ford Truck in about 10 minutes with a serpentine belt and it is quiet again.

If the belt breaks, you will loose power steering, the alternator which will make your car run off battery until the battery dies, and the water pump. The water pump cools the engine, so if that stops running you could cause seroius damage. Also you will lose air conditioning, but who cares in the winter!

Try rubbing bar soap[brand doesn't matter] on inside of belt.
Or you can buy a anti-squeel belt spray. But that is only a quick cure.
Have your belt checked out. Replacing a $40 belt is a lot better than being stranded, plus Tow charge and still having to replace the belt. Piece of Mind.

it is your belt depending how old the car is the bely may be getting old and hard and needing a replacement but if its the older style v-belt stuff just pull up mr.alternator and tighten it back up and there you go if not then get a new belt or even put dish soap on ur belt it will help it not sqeal

good luck

usually when a belt squeals, it's the power steering belt. check fluid level. check belt for wear/tear. top off fluids and/or replace belt.
