try The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall-it is a really involving story about 1943 War-Time England with a focus on school-friends. It's as decent a read for girls as much as boys and you can easily relate to many of the characters and stereotypes of your own relations!

You could try any of the Terry Pratchett novels too, if you like a type that takes the utter p*ss out of the fantasy genre like Lord of the rings/harry potter series etc-very tongue in cheek stuff-try Mort or Guards! Guards!

Try The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (he's got three books in the series), my students think it's an awesome book.

The Outsiders is also an excellent choice.

Stargirl is another good one.
