Of course, you need to have a quality product or service to sell-if you're selling a faulty product, customers will never use your services again. That said, assuming your selling a good product or service, the salesperson needs to truly believe in the product/service (not just act like it), and should be completely familiar with the product (and also familiar with the competition's products as well).

Above all, good salespeople are able to make a personal connection with their customers through open and honest communication. Without honesty, relationships fail-even business relationships.

Also don't assume by looks alone if someone can afford what you are trying to sell. Sometimes I like to play games with the salespeople that I know make a commission. I walk in there with my hair pulled up, jeans and a sweatshirt on and wait for someone to realize that I just might have some money in my pocket.

Be nice and helpful and don't look/act like your break is being interrupted.

I know I don't like it when a sales person seems too pushy towards something. It really makes me not want the product.
Also, I think a good thing is when the sales person actually knows about the products they sell. I don't think it's a good when when I ask a question and the sales person just reads off the box-- like they don't know anything about what they are selling.
