What happened i dont understand what the contorversy is? Was this part of a story line i dont get what happened colud youll help plz.

It really depends on who you believe. I would say 90% of the people out there believe it was real. 10% think Bret was part of it.
Here's the deal. Bret was supposed to do a DQ with Shawn and then the next night on Raw give up the title, since he was going to WCW, but what happened was as soon as HBK put the Sharpshooter on Bret, Vince called for the bell to ring via the ref, meaning bret had gave up, Shawn winning the title as a result instead of a DQ

The Montreal Screwjob is a match between Bret Hart and Shawn Micheals. After deciding to leave WWE for the Greener pastures of WCW Bret and Vince had agreed to let Bret keep the WWE Title after the Montreal match if he would agree to drop the title on RAW the following night. Near the end of the match Bret had Shawn in the Sharpshooter and Vince had the bell rung and had the referee( Earl Hebner) declare Shawn the winner. At which point Bret spit in his face and when approached by Mcmahon in the shower punched him in the face. It all boils down to Vince being paranoid that Bret would take the title with him to WCW, and Vince getting revenge for Bret leaving in the first place. Apparently this is real. Bret hart was supposed to win by DQ and then Throw away the title after the match( going to WCW ) Instead when Shawn Michaels had bret in his own sharp shooter Vince made the ref ring the bell and say Bret Tapped out. The next day Bret left for WCW. Now the reason it was real was when WCW was bought out They wanted to bring bret back. Bret retired from wrestleing and said he would never wrestle again for Vince McMahon. (secondly he also blames his brother Owen harts death on VKM because they didnt push him correctly and made him do stunts he didnt feel was appropriete.)
