The world's tallest mountain is Mount Everest. I was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing in 1952 or 1953 and it is located in Tibet. It is part of the Himalayan mountain range.

In the U.S., it's Mt McKinley.

In the world, It's Everest.

UNLESS you are measuring from the base of the mountain to the peak! If you're doing that, then the tallest mountain in the world would be Moana Loa in Hawaii. But just the highest in terms of elevation about sea level? McKinley in the U.S. Everest in the world.

Mount Everest, and it is in Nepal, near the Chinese border, 29,035 feet tall. Techinally this is the talles mountain ABOVE SEA LEVEL. The world's tallest mountain is Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which is 33,480 ft tall in total (base to peak) of which only 13,796 is above sea level.

United States? The tallest is Mt. McKinley in Alaska. If you're talking about just the lower 48 states, then Mt. Whitney in California.

In the USA:

The "tallest" mountain (from base to top) is Mauna Kea, the big island of Hawaii. Most of it is underwater.

The "highest" mountain (above sea level) is Denali, or Mount McKinley in Alaska.
