Has anyone who is or has been pregnant before dealt with constipation? i mean pretty bad...Ive told my Dr. she encouraged use of metamucil, whole wheat, prune juice and water intake of course. I have done this. She said I can use milk of magnesia but Ive seen some places say not to use anything but fiber from supplements or foods. Are there any herbal teas? Any sitz bath potions for the pain that you know of? I dont want it to go much further or get much worse than it already is. Thank you.

What the doctor recommended is correct. It will go away pretty soon. It usually only last during the beginning. Definitely drink plenty of water and prune juice. It will pass soon though. Don't worry and try not to think about it too much. Just eat healthy and stay hydrated.

Trust your doctor, thats what they are there for. I used milk of magnesia with my last pregnancy and my child is perfectly healthy. It was great because it not only helped with my constipation, but it also helped with the awful heart burn I had. It is not going to hurt your baby. You have to be just as careful with herbal tea's as you do with medications. Its awful being constipated! Its awful when you are pregnant because you feel bad enough. After you get yourself feeling a bit better try a cereal that is really high in fiber like Raisin Bran or All Bran. When you increase your fiber you have to be sure to increase you water intake as well. Also, when you have to go, no matter where you are, get yourself to a bathroom and go because who knows when the time will be right again:) Good luck! I feel your pain!

There is an over the counter "stool softener" that is fine for pregnant women to use it starts with a "c" colax or something like it comes to mind--hmm just ask the pharmacist and they can direct you to what is available.

Have you told your doctor that the constipation is unacceptable? Sometimes they need to be told because they are a little insensitive to first time mothers dealing with this stuff. If you have tried all the suggestions and they aren't working call her/him up everyday and demand help!

High fiber cereal for breakfast (I like Frosted Mini Wheats), apples, apple juice, water of course, stay away from cheese. I have seen herb teas (one in fact called Smooth Move, but I'm not sure the brand), but I don't know if it would safe/recommended for pregnant women.

Eat fiber.Try pears, raisins, prunes, whole-bran cereals and wholegrain breads. I think I ate licorice too - but ask your doctor about this one.

As soon as you have given birth, eat as much fiber as you possibly can. The first poo after giving birth is an absolute killer!

Flax seed worked for me when nothing else did. Start with one teaspoon per day for three days. Two teaspoons for 2 more days. Then one tablespoon for the next two days. If you are still constipated after that, call your doc back, it's getting pretty serious.

I had constipation too when I was preggers. It is from the pre-natel vitamins. Some women get it from just being pregnant. You have to either deal w/it, or drink lots of fluids. I just dealt with it. it sucked big time! I don't envy you. Sorry I couldn't help. Good luck.
