Don't use overly grandiloquent wording in essays. For the most part, professors/teachers are looking for a certain formula; they want to see you attack viciously with an agressive thesis that makes an ARGUMENT. Do not be passive, even though good essays can be passive; they're not looking for it.

They also don't want the paper to be overly complicated with pompous diction, so forget about smart words. Use words you know, and try to make it fairly sophisticated, but you don't need to go overboard with it really. It's more about the format of your essay and your thesis.

As you write more, naturally your vocabulary will grow, and you'll be able to naturally use better words without 'forcing it', which is when the use of those kinds of words is most advantageous.

There are no smart words, only smart writers and smart speakers. The best way to appear smart is to present an essay that is neat, with correct spelling and grammar, and with content that is well organized, well thought out, and clearly stated. When choosing words, remember that short words are stronger than long words.

Don't use big words just because you can. Often, using too many big words will make your essay boring and hard to understand. Also, using a word you are unfamiliar with can lead to using a word incorrectly. If you are typing the essay, Microsoft Word has a good thesaurus. Just right click on the word you want to change and click thesaurus. Or try http://www.thesaurus.com

Using "smart words" just because you can is pretentious. It's better to really learn words and make them yours, then you'll be using them because they are part of your vocabulary and not because they're "smart." Start with an SAT review book and learn the words they have in the verbal review section. As you start learning and using these words in everyday life, they won't be "smart words" anymore--just words a smarter person (you) uses.

I have found that it can actually hurt you to use "smart words" Dictonary.com is a good resource, I still use it in college, here is the thing people want you to get the point across without them having to get up and get a dictionary to read your paper, think of better words, not smarter words; for but use however, for also use in additon, etc

your best bet would be starting off with a sentence. when you come to a certain word knowing that it could be changed to something more "smart sounding", check out thesaurus.com and type in and search for specifics, you'll definitely find all the words you are looking for.

Use a thesaurus. Think of a word that you want to say and then look it up. It will give you numerous words that mean the same thing but sound more . . "intelligent"

Just write your essay as you normally would, then pick out certain words and look for "smarter" words online.

Dictionary.com can give you definitions and synonyms for most words.
