Hi I work at a recruitment agency in Australia.
We generally look for a few things:
1. from the resume - correct spelling (ie. liaison, accommodation)
2. clear speech (no mumbling) or slang or lazy speech (ie. "what are you's doing... should be What are you doing? or "I'll get it for you", preferably - "We can obtain that for you".
3. We ask - what is your customer service experience
4. How do you handle difficult customers
5. How can you screen a call for your manager without the caller getting frustrated
6. How do you prioritise your customers needs (ie. what to do if you are on the phone with a client/customer and someone walks in and comes up to reception)
7. We always look for neat presentation - clean tidy hair, usually tied back (if long), clean neat nails, speak clearly and smile, smile, smile (even when on the phone)

How fast can you type? Have you ever worked in a customer service department? How do you deal with someone who call and you can not understand their English? Do you speak any language other than English? What do you think is the most important factor when the phone rings? How is your spelling and note taking? Can you handle several things at the same time, example the telephone is ringing and someone walks up to your desk? Are you good at getting someone off the phone that you have already answered their question to best of your ability? How would handle the situation? What situation do you think that it would be necessary to call your supervisor for help? Have you ever been fired from a job? If so, why? Why should we consider hiring you for this position? What makes you stand out from the other applicants?

Mostly they will be looking for personality and appropriate dress from you. Speak clearly and concisely. Use proper English - no slang. For a receptionist and customer service position it's always about the personality. They will ask you questions concerning your temperament (bad tempers don't make for good receptionists). They will look for you to have had some experience. If not, then relay experiences you've had to them that might show how you can well handle the public and relate to other people, such as in different organizations you may belong to or volunteer activities you've participated in, etc. Good luck!
