I have a tree ( well more like a large bush) but the trunk is probably about 10 inches across and when it was planted it was a twig but now it is quite thick and only about 12 inches away from my house. Its been there for about 12 years & I am worried that if it continues growing that it could damage the house. It would be a big job to try& dig it out and I was going to saw it down leaving a stump just above ground level , maybe bore a load of holes in it & poison it with something ?! Any ideas what to use that would do the job but not harm the ground or cats/dogs/kids?

Please don't use diesel! It'll not only poison the stump, it'll poison the ground around it too.

Find out what sort of shrub or tree it is first. Some will re-shoot from a stump, some wont. Some have lots of long damaging roots, some don't.

Don't worry too much about the house. Find out what plant you're dealing with first.

If you do decide to take it down. Take it down a bit at a time or get a professional to do it for you, but hire someone qualified who doesn't mind hard work and get a fixed price.

Most garden centres will stock products like "root out", or something similar for stump killing. Level off the stump, slot or drill the the top and pour in the solution in accordance with the guidelines on the box.

Hope you have every success.

Try to dig it close tot he ground level if possible. Then for a quick rot, make number of holes and fill it with soil from the ground with microbes or you may add a bit of compost accelerator which is benign to plants and animals. Then give it time. Th e decay may be relatively faster if it is in a sunny warm area. I did this to my crab apple tree a few weeks ago and I have done it in the past as well.
The other option is to dig soil away from around the trunk ( a bit extra job), then cut it just below the ground level and cover it with soil.

We hired someone to cut down ours because it was so big and we didn't have the equipment to cut it down safely. Using a chain saw at a height over your head is downright dangerous. If its very tall, the limbs are much heavier than they look and may damage your home. Please don't tackle it if you don't have the equipment or can't do it safely. The service also brought out a machine that ground down the stump to a level about a foot below the ground. We had quotes as high as $300.00 but found one service that did it all for $100.00 (the tree was about 30 feet high) They cut the limbs to 1 - 2 foot lenghts and we just had to stack them out for trash pick up.

I had the same problem when I moved to my place. Wait til spring, about late April and cut down the stump to 4" or so above the ground. Then make a collar out of cardboard and stick it on woth packing tape. Pour in Sodium Chlorate, which is a 'green' weedkiller and tightly tape aplastic bag over the crystals to keep out the rain, pets etc.
Leave it till late autumn (about 6+ months) and it will have rotted away and be easy to remove.
You can get the packing tape and chlorate from many pounds shops, or you can get a product called Stump Killer - check the label because the one I bought was £6 and turned out to be sodium chlorate!

Hi Micky The simplest way to rid yourself of this bush is to cut it down as close to the ground as possible, then bore some holes into the trunk. Goto your nearest garden centre and ask them for a product called Root Out then just follow the directions. Check this site, it will explain how Root Out works. http://www.daxproducts.co.uk/rootout.html Cheers

Twelve inches from your house! The roots could already have done the harm. Cut it back to ground level, drill a couple of 10mm holes down the sap line and fill with old burnt engine oil, cover with soil. Then forget about it whilst you try to sell the house!

Chop that tree down then use charcoal to burn up the stomp. I don't know how good you are with a chainsaw, but If you doubt yourself hire a professial. Thats the safest way to go.

On a side note: my uncle's brother-in-law can cut a tree 5 ft thick and make it land within 1 ft of where you want it. I saw him down and he's pretty good.

to be safe you had better check with the council before you hack it to bits just in case its protected sounds absurd i know but my neighbour chopped down a tree in his garden and was fined as it was protected but if it can be felled get a tree surgeon in to do the job they mulch all the bark on sight and you can either use towards the cost of the job or keep for your own use

Cut back as much as you can, right to the trunk. then hammer in copper nails, this will then, over time and in a pet friendly manner kill the trunk, which will rot away naturally. :-)
