Lesko simply lists all available grants -- information that you can get for free from government websites. The problem with him is that Lesko makes it seem that grants are available to anyone for whatever purpose they can think of which is ABSOLUTELY FALSE. He also does a very poor job in presenting the reality of grant application and how hard it is to actually get a grant. He also makes false representation that this and that foundation gives out grants -- and the person who bought the book and applies for the grant finds out that they do not qualify for the grant or the grant is totally for a different purpose as presented by Lesko.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Once you find a grant where you can qualify, apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Look at it at the library. It's free that way. Most of those grants are almost impossible to qualify for. Nobody gives away money just like that. Suggestion: Stop looking for something for nothing.
You get what you earn in life. You won't win the lottery either. Look at things realistically and you have a much better chance at success. To answer your question in a sentence: Yes I did look at his book and no I didn't get anything.

I got one of his books years ago. It was filled with stuff. I never did apply for anything, but loaned it to someone else. Don't know if they tried or not.
