Hypnobirthing is a commitment. They have CD's as part of their program because it's something you need to do everyday. The more you practice falling into a hypnotic state, the easier and quicker it is to do when you're in labor.

I have only had one client use hypnobirthing. When I asked around to other doulas, they all said the same thing about their clients who used this method, and I found it to be the same with my client. They said (and I agree) that it is a wonderful tool if practiced religiously at home, but like any labor tool, it will work for some parts of your labor and not for others. That can also be said for other things such as using a warm shower, getting into a tub, massage, rice packs or even acupuncture. They all have a place, but one thing can't work for the whole labor (except maybe for the acupuncture).

The client that I had who used this method had a very fast, hard labor, and while the hypnobirthing worked for most of the time, the last hour she needed lots of direction because all she learned about and focused on was the hypnobirthing. If you are going to use this method, my advice to you would be to also take a regular childbirth class, that's not taught in a hospital or by a nurse in the hospital (they focus a lot on medications and not natural pain coping techniques). A great class to go to would be Bradley or CEA, which incorporates many different techniques and doesn't focus on just one.

For a natural birth, you may also have to look into switching childcare providers to a very supportive, VBAC friendly, natural childbirth friendly OB, or even better, a midwife. It would also be a great idea to hire a doula who can help guide you through the ups and downs of labor. Also, get a copy of your operative report, and ask your practitioner to go over it with you. You should also go on hospital tour for many different hospitals around you and see which one seems to be the most natural childbirth oriented, and a place where you'd feel comfortable at. You may also want to look into a free-standing birth center (not attached to a hospital). Ask LOTS of questions. I advise my clients to go on the tours first and find a hospital first, then pick a doctor or midwife who practices there. The more research and energy you give to finding the best people who can be on your birth team, the more chances you have to have the birth you want. You need to have your cards lined up, and no one but you can do that.

Good Luck!!!

I just purchased their kit. Whilst it is expensive, I have heard too many bad things go wrong in people having epidurals. Take a look at their website wehere they have samples of women in labor giving their opinion. I am definitely going to try it!
