I have added too much transmission fuel to my car, and I hear that it's dangerous to do. It is probably about 3 inches above the recommended line on the dip stick. Is this too much or can I still get away with having this amount? If I need to take some out, how can I do that?

Poke a 1/4" plastic tube down the dipstick hole an suck it out with a siphon pump. If part of the tranny is submerged in fluid that's not supposed to be submerged it can be a bad thing indeed.

I think JR has a good answer here. You can also buy a vacuum pump for around $20-$40. I don't know if it is worth the investment for you, but as a mechanic, that's what I use when I overfill things like that. Put the hose in there, some pumps even come with a container to catch the fluid, then you can measure how much you pull out too. Start pumping, once the fluid starts flowing, you can either do it as a siphon, or you can take out a little bit at a time and keep checking. When those go over the line, even by three inches, it may not be as overfull as you think (although, no, you don't want to allow it to stay over-full and drive like that). . . Also, on the tranny (automatic), make sure you are checking it while it is running, in park or neutral. It will usually draw fluid down while it is running, and this is the proper way to check it.

Transmission fuel ?
If there is a drain plug on the transmission drain a little at a time into a container until the dip-stick level is down to the check `Cold ' level.
.If you don't have a drain plug, Do not unloosen the pan bolts.
You may break the gasket. Do you have a friend Mechanic .
You could always drive it a `Few' miles to a garage but driving it a long distance would cause too much pressure in the tranny.

Put a CLEAN DRY piece of plastic tubing in through the filler tube and use suction to start the fluid flowing out. Once it is flowing, if the end outside the car is lower than the end in the transmission, it will keep flowing. In other words, siphon it out. BTW, there are siphons with a built in pump so that you do not get a mouth full of transmission fluid. Yuck!
