If you want to use them as chopsticks, don't paint them. I like spray paint for party-favor type things.

Any child's paint that is labled non toxic should be okay to use, but you may still have some come off in the food, or worse, flakes!

If I had to paint them so that the paint can't come off and the paint is safe for food, I would use two part epoxy, which is horrible for your lungs and eyes during application. Once they are perfectly dry, wash them to remove any residue.

Decorative hair sticks are often laquered. I am unfamiliar with laquer, but it seems hard and impermiable.

To avoid the issue of eating the paint, paint just an inch from the wide end. You can paint stripes, tiny motifs, or lettering. This way they can each be personalized as you desire, with out risk.

Just use acrylics and thin slightly for ease of small painting.

Also you create cases for them, whether they are painted or not, out of fabric or quality paper. Fold for a long sleeve for the pair and secure with glue or Fabric glue. Decorate these as desired.

YES they need stuff to chew on. Don't give him a chopstick though because some things like that could be VERY dangerous. Try going to PetSmart or Petco and get some hamster wood and stuff there. They have lots of things to buy that chinchillas can chew on. Hope this helps! :0)

After you paint your chop sticks seal them with shellac. It is 100% food safe when dry. I use it after I finish my cutting boards and butcher blocks after final staining. Do not use a shellac spray. I get mine as kits from:
www.woodcraft.com
www.rockler.com
It comes as flakes that you dissolve in 100% denatured alcohol that come in the kit. It takes about three days for all of the flakes to dissolve. No measuring and no math. Just strain it through a coffee filter to make sure to get out the impurities and brush on. It will dry in less than 15 minutes. Buff them with a scotch bright pad to give it a nice even satin sheen.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/6p4J8
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I agree that you should not paint then bottom part, but to seal it, there is a polyurathane for Butcher boards they sell at Lowes the will seal the paint, and is safe for products associated with food.

Give the 10 to number one. Never assume however that someone might not act out actually trying to use them as they are designed. Spray would be best in any case.

I agree with the first answer... you shouldn't paint them if you're going to eat with them afterwards.
You could "stain" them with foodcoloring. It would soak right into unfinished wood.
Maybe use this technique to stain them pink and then add some ribon/beads to the top in silver?!
