I agree with the above. Smoke on the Water or any other easy melody that you already know is a good place to start.

Mostly your fingers need to get used to it, so start with a simple melody that you think is fun.

i your a christian, most worship songs aren't very hard and you will be able to play them with little practice.

set a time to do your practice every day, or at least 6 days a week. devote the time regularly. do anything you want with the guitar but spend that time with it every day. regularity is the key.
over time you will get better.

i was learning to play guitar by myself too.
firstly, its easier to start out with simple child songs like twinkle twinkle, or ba ba black sheep, sort of stuff. one that i used alot was the theme to 007, lol

with practise youll be able to try harder songs bit by bit.

get a book, like hal leonard guitar method. i've used it for 2 years now.

Take lessons. You need to learn proper technique. There's much more to the instrument than "pressing strings". Learn it right.
