Michelle Pfeiffer plays Beth Cappadora in this film, a mother whose three-year-old son Ben is kidnapped from the hotel where her high school reunion is being held. Beth had left Ben for just a few minutes in the care of her elder son, seven-year-old Vincent, and she feels guilty for doing so.

Nine years later, the Cappadoras have opened a restaurant and also have gone on to have another child (six-year-old Kerry) when a twelve-year-old boy named Sam turns up at the door, offering to mow their lawn for pocket money. Beth is convinced this child is Ben and she is right. It turns out one of Beth's former high school classmates stole Ben and raised him as her own son. When she died, the husband she later married gained custody and he never knew the truth.

Beth and her husband Pat are delighted to have Ben back but not everyone shares their joy. Vincent, now aged sixteen, has gone off the rails largely due to his own guilt and also feeling neglect growing up in a house which has lost a child. Ben, who now wants to be called Sam, just wants to remain with the man he considers his father and has little interest in reconciling with his real family despite the fact he has little choice since he's still a child.

In the end, Sam returns back to his 'father' and Vincent is involved in a drunken car crash and is facing jail time. Sam is angry because he does feel a bond with his brother and feels Vincent hates him. The last scenes see Sam coming back to his family home in the middle of the night and making peace with Vincent as their parents look on from their bedroom window with a smile.

It's not a bad film but the novel, by Jacquelyn Mitchard, is superior because it delves more into the characters' feelings and what is motivating them to behave as they do.

She loses her 3 year old in a crowd and come to find out like 10 years later, he was kidnapped. So half of the movie is about her going into depression over losing her son and how it tears her family apart. Then, the boy is located and returns to her..but his name has been changed and he's been living with his kidnappers and doesn't have any memory of his parents or older brother. It's a better book.

Michelle Pfeiffer's character, Beth, attends her high school reunion, only to have her youngest son, Ben, kidnapped. She, her husband, and elder son, Vincent, realize they will never find the boy and learn to go on with their lives...until 10 years later a young boy knocks on Beth's door and asks if she wants him to mow her yard. Beth recognizes him as Ben and tests quickly reveal that the boy, who has been raised with the name Sam, is actually Beth's son. We learn that one of Beth's high school classmates kidnapped the boy because she was desperate to have children. The woman has died since then, her husband knew nothing of it, and the courts give custody of Sam to Beth and her husband. Sam has problems adjusting to his new life, and especially his new older brother Vincent. In the end, Beth and her family let Sam go back to the man who raised him.
