Actually John the Baptist didn't want to baptize Jesus. When Jesus stepped fore ward, John told him that it was him than needed to be baptized by Jesus and not the other way around. John had recognized that Jesus was the Messiah. But Jesus told him that in order for things to be right, he needed to be baptized and John needed to be the one to do it. After Jesus stepped into the water and was Baptized, the Heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove and landed upon him. And a voice from Heaven said " This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." After that Jesus went out into the wilderness and it was there that Satan tried to tempt him.

Jesus' baptism marks the start of his ministry and sets the tone for the gospels. It confirms Jesus' holy nature with his reception of the holy spirit and in John's recognition of him as Messiah. The use of John fulfils several messianic prophecies from Isaiah and other Old Testament sources (the voice crying out in the wilderness) as well as John's own prediction that one would come whose feet he would not be fit to wipe. This is more proof, theologically speaking, that Jesus is the expected Messiah. Historically, John was an important religious figure of the time. His approbation and recognition of Jesus would have strengthened his claim as Messiah. Conversely, Jesus' humble need for an older mentor to start him on his path shows his humanity and lack of confidence as a new rabbi about to head off into the world. The whole point of the baptism is the beginning of Jesus' career as son of God. It reveals him to be the messiah in a way he only hints at. The roots of this scene are laid down by the story of John's birth and history. John is Jesus' cousin and his birth is also miraculous. The gospel writers are keen to connect the two and there is some evidence Jesus was a follower of John's before he received his call.

Hope this helps.

It will be the prophecy full filled by Jesus and told by the prophet Isaiah thousand years ago, that God will be coming to the earth as human being (in flesh).

Jesus was baptized as an example to all humanity so we will do the same, in order for his blood to clean us for all sins. Even though he did not need to be baptized, because He was God manifest in the flesh.

Please read :
(1 Timothy 3:16)
16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

(1 John 4:1-3)
1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Also, he was baptized by John the Baptist because John was waiting for a sign from Heaven that Jesus was the one true God in flesh. Today Jesus is in Spirit.

I hope this helps.

God sent John the Baptist to baptize Jesus Christ. John was born before Jesus.

1. To fulfil scripture
2. To set us all an example
3. This was in similitude of the starting of new life - in Jesus' case that of His ministry on earth.

See Matthew 3: 13-17

For many reasons, one is that he wanted to proclaim the baptising of sinners to be acceptable and even crucial to his followers, another reason is that he was proclaiming he was a man by his actions, and not God in spiritual form anyway, but of flesh and blood.

If John the B. had needed a nice coffee table he would have gone to Jesus the carpenter, I suppose.

To show that it was something that we all have to do. If Jesus had to get baptized (and he is perfect without sin) then we definitely have to. Basically, He was doing it as an example for us.
