Out of curiosity, I see a lot of my filipino friends carrying and using a lot of Hawaiian things.

They have the pukka shells hanging in their cars, hawaiian style stickers, etc.

Filipinos are not Hawaiians, but why do they like to use a lot of Hawaiian things?

Whaaaaat? Why are you making a such a generalization about a nation of diverse people with Polynesian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Anglo and much more in their heritage? A nation smack-dab in the middle of the information highway? A nation whose largest extranational population are Americans?

And, regarding the goods you describe, do the notions of tropical regions and shared ancient cultural roots ring any bells for you? (Meaning, similar resources, climes, etc usually yield similar adaptations; and also that the Pacific Islands were first populated by the ancient Polynesians ..)

During the time when the Hawaiian Queendom was overthrown and the Planations became established many people from many cultures (including lots of filipinos) came to work. Hawaiian culture is now a mishmash of traditions that came from the cultures that worked there. So, you may have it wrong... why do the Hawaiians have so many filipino type things? Plantations!

There can be two answers. I've seen Pilipinos accept the Hawaiian culture as their own. I feel like because it's the closest thing, they feel, to their culture. I've seen some people who just feel like it's "cool" and have no connection to Hawaii at all... I'm Pilipino and access to our history is not easy, but many Pilipinos came to America through Hawaii, hence the huge population there. So many feel that Hawaiian things are kind of represent their culture.

There are Pilipinos who come from Hawaii and things considered "Hawaiian" are a part of who they are. As it was mentioned earlier, there was a huge number of Pilipinos who came to Hawaii by ship to work on the sugar cane plantations in the early 1900s. From that point on their families were raised on the islands with Hawaiian influence. Once Pilipinos gained the resources to leave the islands, the Hawaiian culture came with them. Many of my relatives, while they are Pilipino, relate to Hawaiian culture because that's what they were raised around.

I think you are over-generalizing, aren't you?

I live in Newport Beach, and I see a lot of white guys wearing hawaiian shirts. So what?

Hang loose!

They're both Polynesian cultures so they share some heritage. They aren't that far away from each on the map.

lol i had a bunch of Filipino friends in h.s and they always did that.. i think because they believe that they are pacific islanders..i bet if you ask your friends if they consider themselves Asian or pacific islander..they will say pacific islander..i don't believe they are but I may be geographically incorrect.. again that does not make them Hawaiian i think they just wish they were
