Many eastern martial arts disciplines have taught techniques that when applied can help one "transcend" pain.

Though studys have proven that humans have the ability to suppress pain, scientific evidence has pointed to many different reasons for pain suppression.

Many of the techniques regarding suppressing pain is through meditation. This is process that varies with the individual disciplines approach to meditation, which often includes either focusing ones mind or on the extreme oposite emptying ones mind all together.

Martial artist have been able to take extreme pain and continue to function. This, in my experience, is not that you do not feel the pain you just learn to ignore it.

I've used a technique that has worked for me. I use a mantra and recite it till my mind is focused on it instead of the pain. It's worked for me while at the doctors office getting needles and when I've had medical conditions that cause intense pain, such as an abscess tooth and a broken wrist.

But it's important to remember that pain is the way that your body tells you something is wrong. I would suggest that if the pain is serious or persistent that you seek medical advice rather than finding a way to "not feel pain."

Yes. Their is this scientific research that said about meditation in which scientists took a few selected subjects in to practicing meditation and others that did not. The subjects who meditated ended in the experiments (enduring pain) either not feeling pain or less pain than the ones who did not meditated. So theirfore meditation is a good way in training your mind to feeling well at least less pain when in pain. Well, hope this helps and take care. :)

There is a great deal of merit to most of the other answers here. I do believe that this is a very subjective, individual topic though.

For me, I have found that pain suppression per se is a bit of a misnomer, and can actually build up to other problems. I think for myself "pain management" might be a better term. I've found that ignoring pain by either distraction or mental clarity, is not nearly as effective as simply accepting the pain for what it is, but having the mental and emotional strength to control my reaction to it.

I have worked hard labor jobs for most of my life, and have been injured countless times. In most instances there is a mindset of "carry on, there's work to do". This is Not to say that one should ignore pain, but simply to not allow a physical phenomenon to control my non physical being.
To paraphrase CS Lewis, we are not bodies that happen to contain souls, we are spirits trapped in physical bodies.

I think you can train your mind to tolerate more pain, but only by feeling pain. I have several tattoos and body piercing and in the process of getting them I realized I could take more pain than I orginally thought. I think that I can draw on that experience to handle unwanted pain. I still take aspirin for my arthritis pain though.

umm criss angel and david blaine are magicians therefore whatever you seen that made you think they had high threshold for pain... wasn't even real... I'm almost 100% sure that if it was possible and you could walk up to either of them and hit them in the shoulder with your hand... the would wince... its natural somepeople have better resistance to pain than others but its something that just happens im pretty sure they are no way you could train it unless you tortured yourself to get used to the pain... but that would be crazy to do something like that... a good example of someone who i know that can withstand a hell of alot of pain is one of my friends... he had a collision with a stopped car and him goin 50(according to him) when he hit the car he flew through the windsheild(didnt have a seat belt) and hit the back of the car and fell onto the road... now even though he had broken 6 bones on his face(including the socket of his eye) and 2 ribs and his left arm he still didnt lose consciousness and got up to go check on his girlfriend who had her seatbelt on and suffered from only a busted lip and a black eye from the airbag... i know this cause i happened to be the one in the car he hit... of course i had mine and wasnt hurt at all... now i have another friend that got into a fight and got hit one time and was knocked unconcsious and had to go to the hospital... its just how your made some people can take alot some cant

It is more a belief than a training need. Belive there is no pain and there isn't.

Had same discussion with a friend of mine a few years ago. We were in a daft mood too, so he said so if a burn you with a lighter it won't hurt. So I said no, so he held the lighter under my arm, burnt me and I proved my point. He ended up taking the lighter away cos he got a bit worried.

just think of something else,and don't look at whatever is in pain. it works for me. but sometimes not feeling pain can be dangerous. you might need medical attention and not get it 'cause you feel ok. just make sure the pain you don't want to feel isn't serious.

I belileve that it is very possible, meditation and belief have a great deal to do with it. Its called The Will. We all have it. The body will pass out lets say after an impact or accident I believe to protect the body, shock its called.

apparently so, i have heard there is a way not to have pain in chilbirth and things, i think it works in a way like conditioning the mind -to see pain as comfort. very strange i know but im sure there are sites on it

It's possible but it wouldn't be a good thing. How can you be truly happy if you've need experienced pain. Your mind needs the reference
