Identity theft is a crime perpetrated against unsuspecting people everywhere who are simply living their lives and are victimized by thieves.

The theives that are doing it. Perhaps the credit card companies also because they are not checking and verifying information before giving out high limit credit cards.

You're responsible for shreding all your info and being juducious about whom you divulge personal info to. Never give your SS number as a means of ID to any place.....they might tell you it's required, it's not.
You can only do som much though. Criminal exist everywhere and you probably can't prevent it fully.
