do i have to connect my old desktop modem to a new livebox that i have connecting a new laptop?

do i plug in the old modem for my desktop to the livebox for both to be online together?

No, if your livebox is just a broadband modem without router, you'll need a router for both to be online; if it has a router built in, you connect both computers via wireless/ethernet/USB. You don't use the dialup modem from your old computer at all.
