When there is a question posed about the Iraq war. I keep hearing people say that Iraq never attacked us we have no reason to be there. Prior to invasion, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France had been engaged in a low-level conflict with Iraq, by enforcing the two Iraqi no-fly zones in the north and the south of the country. These zones were created following the Persian Gulf War. Iraqi air-defense installations repeatedly targeted American and British air patrols and were often engaged by the coalition aircraft shortly afterwards. December 1998, Iraq announced it would no longer respect the no-fly zones and resumed its efforts in shooting down Allied aircraft. Saddam Hussein offered a $14,000 reward to anyone who could accomplish this task. June of 2002. The United States and its allies carried out military strikes against Iraqi targets after being fired on by Iraqi anti-aircraft installations. In retaliation for the Iraqi's now-daily air defense attacks on coalition aircraft, the September attacks included a 5 September 100-aircraft attack on the main air defence site in western Iraq.

Excellent question.

Why are so many people defending Saddam Hussein?
Is there some sort of guilt these people feel about the united states defending itself?

Saddam agreed to the no-fly zone after he lost the first gulf war AFTER he invaded a peaceful country.

And yet they still defend Saddam Hussein and his regime?

These are the same people who made us withdraw from Vietnam when we had the enemy beat because of the "protests" and the "unpopular nature" of the war.

People like you make me glad we have intelligent people asking questions, good job.

Will he read it? NO Believe only 10 % of what you read and 50 % of what you see. Being an English teacher my grade; Overall grade C+ Composition D Punctuation C Quote Reliable Sources F You as voter have the power to elect into office or elect out of the office. Do we stand for freedom? What about the Mosque in New York? Do we stand for equality? What about gay marriage? The freedom to choose to have an abortion? The list goes on. So, yes we are not a perfect nation, but instead of writing a hate filled letter back the candidate of your choice to replace the man you voted into office. This President did not start the phony war we now find ourselves in. That blame goes to Bush the liar, the cheat the one who hid Information before the attack on 911 just for the fact that he could go to war and finish what his chicken father could not finish. Then he hid more information on WMD. There were none, all BS from this spineless man. I know you voted for senior two times and his useless son two times as well. Look in the mirror you are to blame for the war we are in. Just like the last one against Vietnam a war we can not win no matter how many troops we send in. I know that a 90 year old geezer did not vote for a wacky woman from Alaska. And if you did not vote than you must wait for the next election and vote as that is what you fought for. Thank-you very much for your service to the country.

People respond to questions like that becasue they are forced to have an opinion on it these days. The fact is that many people form their opinions from very limited information, mostly from what they see on tv and do not take into account the complex history or previous warfare in the area.

there are a lot of countries that would shoot us down if we flew over their territory without permission.

Bottom line, we were supposed to be at war with terror. The type of terror that brought us 9-11. This country needed justice for 9-11. Instead we attacked Iraq. It was the wrong thing to do.

Iraq never attacked the United States. They fired on planes that were attacking their country (even if it was justified). There's a difference.

To be honest, would the USA have done anything different if China were flying over us every day?

There are entirely too many people who do not share your (correct) understanding of the situation. The failure to pacify the country has, of course, not been helpful in dealing with this.
