you need to replace your battery. what does this mean? do i need to replace this if i want to use it w/o a charger? i have a Dell laptop if that helps...

You answered your own question. Dell's diagnostics tells you your battery is dead. Sure, you can use the AC adapter until the new battery arrives. Otherwise, you need a battery to move from desktop to laptop.
I have 2 batteries - 1 in the laptop during the day, the other I charge overnight. I switch them everyday.

Most likely your battery has been recalled by Dell, because it is defective and Dell knows this by the serial number associated with your computer. You should contact Dell tech support at 1-800-624-9896.
