just don't start the fight...its ok to defend yourself though
use the palm of your hand and aim right between the eyes..
this one is very useful...use your elbows a lot and hair pulling is ok...when your fighting pretty much anything goes...no one ever asks how you fought...they ALWAYS ask who won though

I'd suggest that you take up Aikido or Tai Chi. If you live in a big city, you should be able to find a community center or park or something where you could join up, possibly for free. That way, you'll have a non-violent means of defending yourself if you ever need to.

Some basic self-defense tips in the meantime:
* Run away if you can. Avoidance is the best defense.
* aim for tender spots on the body: the instep, the shin, the groin - there are others, but they can be lethal if you don't know what you're doing, so stick to those.
* Use gravity. If somebody grabs you, for example, drop into a strong straddle stance with your knees bent while holding onto the guy. He'll over-balance, and then he's at your mercy.
* Don't use fists. It takes a long time to condition fists for hitting, so always strike with your open palm instead. Just make sure to pull four fingers back and keep them together, or you might hook and break them.
* Use big, circular movements if you are trying to control an opponent, for example, grab his arm and throw him. It gives you momentum and leverage, and unbalances your opponent.

However, the best thing to do is learn how to stop a fight before it starts, either by defusing the situation or by neutralizing the person/thing that's driving the confrontation. You could take conflict management classes for this, but believe it or not, the best teacher I've found in regards to this is a writer called David Gemmel. Read his novels 'Legend' and 'Waylander', and you'll understand what I mean.

Good luck otherwise.

I am 30 and have never been in a fight in my life. However... it sounds like you're in an area where it's almost expected.

I'd say to take some self-defense classes, maybe some kickboxing classes (great cardio workout too!), etc. I'd still say walk away when you can though. Both people in a fight are usually expelled from school or even arrested (my daughter's school district has a strict no-fighting policy... both parties WILL be arrested in a fight.) Aside from that... you never know when someone's gonna pull out a knife or worse. Fights can escalate VERY quickly.

Be safe!

Don't listen to the ones that say "don't fight" they are the one's who can't. And everyone don't have the luxury to be home schooled. When you know for sure that somebody is about to try to fight you when they approach you don't say any thing just stand there, and most likely (cause she's a girl) sorry, she's going to talk, holler, and point in your face. My advice is to hit her in her throat wit your hand straight like a chop that will shut her as$ up and she will be so stuned, hurt and reachin for her neck then you can just whoop her as$. OH always take the first swing that way even if you get beat at least you got one hit in!

P.S the eye also is very sensitive so if you hit there first to that'll get her

Try your best to avoid a fight. If they won't stop and you find yourself needing to defend yourself, first and foremost try to get away. Make sure your hair is in a bun and girls tend to pull hair. Horrible, I know. I'd take off any jewelry as it can hurt you badly if pulled off (earrings especially). I would just say cover your face. But trust me, you don't want to get into a fight. Try to talk to a teacher, counselor, principal before resorting to violence. That way, if the girls start something with you, they will know you were not the instigator.

I went to some of the roughest inner city schools there are when I was growing up and I never once had to get in a fight.
Grow up, and stop hanging around losers who want to do nothing but fight and act like fools, and you'll be much better off in the long run.

You should only fight in life & death situations (Martial Arts): Kidnapping, rape, when being attacked.

Boxing, Kick-boxing, Mai-Tai, Karate ... they are formes of art and can help you avoid punches & kicks.

When it really matters ... Shin- to-shin kick as hard as you can - be prepaird to have broke shin, but you know it's coming, and then you can run. Also, a good finger into the eye socket will help you get away ... but remember, when you do these, the person who you did this to will aim to kill you after being hurt and your best strategy is to get to safety. These only give you about one minute to escape.
