Doesn't it really aggravate you when people answer your question with 'LOL' and nothing else?

Are they being lazy or do they feel challenged by the language?

I don't expect a thesis from any users but even a simple, "I'm sorry, I don't know" would be acceptable rather than 'LOL'.

Perhaps I'm showing my age.
Oh well, don't mind an old biddy like me!!

Thank you for allowing me to get that off my chest.

First of all you aren't old. Second of all, forgive me for doing that.

We use this because it takes long to type "Laughing Out Loud", and some people are not fast typers. Some write fast but not type fast.

Oh yeah, and because some people like me live in the "hood", so english here is quite challenged. I am the only one in a 15 kilometer radius that knows what sophisticated means. I don't speak "layman's terms" english in person, but here yes so I can type quicker. As you might have seen before I also do not start my sentences with capital letters, and etc. But if you look at my "Doctor Who" report then you'll slighty see how well i have adopted your language!

I don't have any difficulty but I am aware that a lot of first language English people don't know the difference. I blame the standard of primary school education. Even the teachers can't spell these days.

It's quite simple if you asked me. I mean, English isn't my first language--Spanish is. But to tell you the truth, I speak English better than Spanish. Okay I won't put LOL... Oops! I already did! Sorry...

Well, it should be rather easy to pick the best answer, it's the one without a LOL in it. Btw (can I write that), English is my second language, French is my maternal tongue.

See, just like Hamlet, english isn't my primary language :)
and second :
IT would be weird if I was 37, at home, and typing LOL to answer a serious question.

so can I LOL, at least for a couple more decades without somebody correcting me?
Merci

we say LOL because we find it funny or stupid. if everyone answered "i'm sorry, i don't know", your quesion would never get answered, but when people say LOL, you know they at least were entertained by your question if nothing else. dont take it personally and stop lecturing us!

english isn't even my first language, Italian is.

Some people just don't have much to contribute to a conversation, therefore "lol" is used. I doubt they seriously are "Laughing out Loud".

I know how you feel. It sickens me that some individuals, when confronted by an intellectual superior, resort to name calling and the dreaded "lol".

thanks for the points old timer, lol (Gah!)
