I agree with many of you! In terms of soccer, he is not worth the 250 mil, but in terms of exposure, marketing and attraction; yes! Having that said, I don't believe soccer will ever impact the US in the way it impacts South America or Europe, and even some countries in Africa or Australia. I think that it's simply not part of the American culture they way football, basketball and baseball are. In the rest of the world, soccer is something that is learned and passed on from one generation to another. It would take years and years for soccer to reach that kind of popularity here in the US, if it ever reaches it at all!!!

How do you define '''worth''? In terms of additional revenue (merchandising etc) and publicity exposure that he will bring to LA Galaxy then maybe yes. In purely football terms? No, of course not. His legs have long gone which is why Capello wouldn't play him at Real, and why he was dropped by Mclaren from the England squad. He is kaput.

I'd love to say hehehe - those dumb *** Yankees have been had, they think they are buying a Ronaldinho and what they have got is a Ronald Mcdonald. But I reckon they know what they are doing - it's all about the mighty dollar. But I reckon Becks is going to struggle to make an impact in the American soccer league even though the standard is that of the English 3rd division or thereabouts. But it won't matter as long as the shirt sales keep on coming.

Ok, first off, its David Beckham.

i don't follow soccer, i believe it is a really boring sport to watch, but here is my opinion.
I believe this is ridiculous, especially in America. Soccer rarely has attention in the states, and this might help, but right now there is no way that he is worth 50 mil a year, and I don't think anybody is. Football, baseball, and basketball, have all the attention. The last time I can remember soccer being on ESPN was probably FIFA WC 06.

As most have said, playing wise he has never(even in his prime) been the best player in the world. He just doesnt have the speed to get past defenders like the Henry's and Ronaldinho's do... But he does have sex appeal and HUGE marketing value(Brand Beckham) and in this way he is worth 250 million. People have mentioned ticket sales but thats only a small factor.. Theres jersey sales(etc) and goal by beckham ads and stuff like that.

Beck's not worth that and the figure is a fraud its a deceite for Media attention, I read an article and I believed what the writer said. he said that the MLS would never allow such a pay for a player becos of its past expirience, but the figure actually represents his value in endorsements and posibly some hollywood bend it like Beckham stuff you know? as hes more of a comercial product than a footballer, follow the article from soccernet.com.

I don't think he's worth 250 mil but I am hoping that he'll bring more people to the sport. My husband and I go to the FC Dallas games frequently and I'm surely going to make it a point to attend the LA Galaxy games when we play them. He's obviously not going to turn the sport into a big thing like football is here in America, but I'm interested to see what he brings to the sport.

As a soccer player no. For star power... we will find out in a few months if he can bring audiences up and sell tickets. The big question is, how many players from Europe will follow him?

peace

Perhaps his name and the marketing attached to it. His playing ability is not. Americans think he is still in his prime.

Satuday Night Live summed it up best when they did their fake news. They said the real story wasn't that Beckham is coming to America, but that Los Angeles actually had a soccer team.

anyone is worth what someone else is willing to pay them. that's capitolism. that's what this country is based on. i don't watch soccer and i'm not going to start watching soccer now. and america is not suddenly going to become a soccer friendly nation because of this. it didn't happen when pele came here, and it's not gonna happen now. anyone who thinks americans are gonna become soccer fans because of this are kidding themselves. BUT, i say good for david beckham. someone was willing to pay him an obscene amount of money and he was smart enough to jump on it, that's the american way. i say we make him an honerary citizen.

I am by no expert in sport team management or soccer for that matter, but skills wise, no, he is DEFINITLY not worth 250M. Last athlete that stood a chance of redeeming himself for that paycheck was A-Rod, and even while is career numbers are spectacular, since signing that contract, and especialy with the yankees......we know the rest. Skills wise he may not be worth that much, but the interest and attention he may bring to the Galaxy, in their opinion, may be worth it, but 250M to pay that, and still be making a profit off of his name........Good luck to the Galaxy

I couldn't believe it. I know that soccer is popular but I didn't know soccer teams made that much revenue to pay someone as high as they are paying this guy. Regardless, some rich guy sure does have a mancrush on this guy!
