It's cheaper to completely incinerate the trash and even do so without generating pollutants in the environment, than it would be to send it to another planet. But if we made the incredible decision to toss it out of this planet, it makes more sense to shoot it out to the sun, because it'll take less energy to do that. However, I've actually heard some environmentalists say that "we shouldn't be polluting the sun"! Hahahahah, oh that one is too funny.

There is not 'too much trash' on the Earth. The US produces far more trash than any other country, and we can fit a thousand year's worth of trash (even projected for population growth) in a several mile square landfill. Put it out in Montana or the Dakotas and no one would ever notice it. No need to start trashing other planets.

I think a lot of these people (I guess most are kids) think you can just throw up a rocket whenever you feel like it.

That is why a lot of them don't understand why we have not been back to the moon, and gives them an excuse to listen to garbage hoax stories.

I just wish they would learn, do some research (heck the internet is busting with information) before they make inane comments on the internet.

My dear, it is all about payload. It costs hundreds of times as much to put people into outer space as it does a simple device. Humans are heavy and the stuff they need to exist up there is heavier still.

Garbage is even heavier, and we have not had a rocket since the Saturn V was scrapped at the end of Apollo missions, that can take payloads like you would need to get tonnes of garbage into space.

And Saturn Vs did not come cheap, and required half a miilion pounds of fuel just to get Men on their way to the moon.

Because construction and launch of a big enough rocket to take one ton of trash off Earth generates more than one ton of trash. Way more! For example, the empty first stage that would be dropped in the ocean would be considered trash, and I bet it weights more than the payload being launched!

But of course the whole idea is silly for countless reasons, not the least of which is expense.

Or....why cant we just learn to minimize the trash on our planet and come up with alternate energy generation with the help of trash. Self-control is the key to sustaining life. We can think of colonizing other planets for life, not for trash. Spare the space..please! :-)

Cost to effectiveness ratio.

The pure amount of cost, to take just 1 ton of garbage to another planet would be unsightly. And 1 ton of trash would have very little impact on the global enviroment.

What you hear is typical fearmongering...we're not running out of room for our trash. And, frankly, your question shows absolutely no comprehension for the incredible task it would be to take our trash to another planet.

How would we get it to Mars? We have never actually landed on one of those planets with actual people, so how could we get it out of the spacecraft?

I think it already is? I put my trash out every Wednesday and some big alien machine comes and takes it?
