All I know is it works on sensors! I`ve checked all the house, every nook and cranny....nothing!!

What do you think happened?

If you were in the house and the system was not set. i.e. in 'day' mode it should/could not have gone into alarm. It depends on what the panel displayed?? Could have been a tamper or a fault in the pcb. Try resetting it and see what happens.

If you were in the house and it wasn't set it couldn't have been any of the sensors or contacts - obviously if the alarm isn't set, they can't trigger it. In this case I suspect the battery in your panel - if this is old and defunct and you had a power cut even for a millisecond this could have triggered it.

If it was part set ie. you were in and alarmed part of the house while you were in a different part, it could be a creepy crawly or something. If this is the case your panel will have indicated which zone it was on and hence which sensor is likely to have triggered and go from there. You can check any sensors yourself for creepies - whip the front cover off (the internal panel will sound but not outside) silence this with your code. Have a good look and then give the inside a clean with new dry quarter inch paint brush to remove dust etc. Replace the cover and reset. Bingo!

Hope this helps.

I used to install alarms. On the main panel it should tell you which zone or sensor set off the alarm. Sometimes you just get a blip and it might not happen again, but if it does and its the same zone, its best to replace that sensor. Usually after 6 to 10 years things start to get a bit unreliable and maybe time to replace the lot or at least have it serviced by a reputable company. They will test each component will an electrical meter and tell you if anything is on its way out. Servicing is about £30 per year plus any parts needed.

If you have the user guide that goes with the alarm it will tell you how to access the log. This tells you which was the last zone to activate the alarm. It can also tell you whether it was a tamper fault. Oviously, if it is a fault you will need to get it rectified.

When was the last time you had the alarm serviced?

It could be your back-up battery is flat - it could be a lot of things, some of which have already been mentioned.

It might have been useful had you given more information like what is the make/model of the alarm, how long its been installed etc. You probably need to get it checked out by an alarm co close to where you live.

PIR's or passive infrared detectors, are usually pretty reliable, they get more sensitive, but less acurate with time. Must find out which circuit was tripped, as you were in the house, i take it the alarm was not set. windows and doors have portal, or door contacts, these are a magnet that holds the contact in place, until the magnet is moved away, they won't cause any trouble if the alarm is not set, bad batteries can depending on the make of alarm, try new ones. also the 'bell box' if it went off when not set, whole bell boxes are around £25-40 for a half decent one, maybe worth just doing if the zone tripped isn't showing on keypad

Your alarm keypad should tell you WHICH alarm set off the alert. You can also call your service and ask them which one went off. I have had false alarms from 2 things:
- Birthday balloons drifing in front of the motion sensor the day after
- Wind flexing the front doors(double with no post between)
- You could also have had someone TRYING to enter - check your locks.

There is also a kind of alert when you lose land-line phone service, and the system can't call the service. Those are a pain in the neck.

Do you have motion detectors? Should not be on though. There should be sensors on windows and doors. Go wiggle each door or window till you find one that might have broke connection and set off the alarm.

sometimes house alarms will go off during bad weather.

during the 2004-2005 hurricane season (I live in Florida) the alarm at my house went off during hurricane Charley. I hope you knew how to turn yours off! we had just moved to our house and the previous owners didn't leave the code, so my dad had to disconnect the battery.

hope that helped a little!

common problem is spiders walking in front of the sensor. check behind all sensors for cobwebs and get rid of spiders if there are any
