A very good question. The temperature gradient is a measure of the change in temperature over some specified distance in either the horizontal or the vertical. In the vertical the temperature gradient is called the lapse rate and its average value is 6.5 deg C per km. If the wind is blowing along the temperature gradient at the surface you can predict how the temperature will change at your location over time.
