z-12=6. To get the value of z you add 12 to both sides. z-12+12=6+12. As long as you do it to both sides it is okay. Then you got z=18. Plug in the z value and see if you get the proper answer.

Since z - 12 = 6, add 12 to each side to obtain z = 6 + 12 = 18.

z=18. You get this by adding six to 12, the reason for this is in order to figure out the value of z you have to look at the equation, z has to equal the number that when 12 is subtracted from it, it equals six, meaning if you add six to twelve you get that number.
An easy way to remember this is to switch the equal sign and the sign of whatever mathematics you are doing, in this case the subtraction sign... in the place of the equal sign, you put the OPPOSITE of whatever mathematics you are doing, the opposite of subtraction is addition. Turning this equation into z=12 + 6 and that equals 18

*Solve for the z-variable...

First: isolate "z" on one side > add 12 to both sides...

*Moving variables to the opposite side means: use the opposite sign.

z - 12 + 12 = 6 + 12
z = 18
