why do we live in a world where we feel compelled to have stuff that doesnt really matter?

I don't think Americans have a brain that is somehow wired differently than anyone else in the world. I think the real answer is that we have many material possessions because we can afford them, but that is a trait that can be found just about anywhere, it just doesn't get a chance to manifest itself in poor countries, so you think we alone feel this need.

A lot of this desire comes from the media constantly telling us that we need something new, bright, and shiny to make us happy. Everywhere you turn there are advertisements making you feel guilty if you don't have certain things or provide them for your family. I say this because I went to the country Antigua 27 years ago and the people were very content and happy. I went back there five years ago and the people had totally changed. They had no contentment in their heart and wanted everything they saw on cable and satellite television. So I have personally seen the power that the media has on people.
