Amy,

This will all depend on what you consider a major problem, or even a problem at all. If the current warming trend continues temperatures will probably increase by another 0.6 degrees C during the remainder of my life (I'm probably a bit older than you, so you might live to see a greater temperature increase). This is about the same level of increase we have seen in the last 30-40 years. Based on past performance, the changes will be inconvienient, but not a major problem, at least not for me.

Your question has been in the news of late. Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of England, gave a speech a few days ago emphatically stating that human behavior must change now or we will face "dire consequences" within our lifetimes. The speech was on the occasion of the receipt of a British government commissioned scientific report, The Stern Review, spelling out the economic specifics of what awaits if climate change isn't stabilized quickly, and also emphatically shows that the only logical cause for the rapid change in climate is human activity. I urge everyone to at least read the 27 page summary which also includes a graph showing what consequences happen at what temperature change. The answers to the questions you raised are all there. The summary and the full report can be found at the location listed as the reference below. Lest you fall into total despair, the report states that committing 1% of global GDP to the problem would be enough to stabilize the climate, IF we act NOW. Links from the below page will lead you to some of the best science-based global warming information I've found on the web.

20 years ago, winter in may part of the world meant -25 C with a week or two at -30 to -40 C in late December and January. Winter driving was safe because snow just blew off the road leaving dry pavement. In the last three years, I have seen freezing rain rather than snow around Christmas and very icy roads. For me doing a 360 at highway speed is a major problem already. I have a friend with allergies to spores and pollen. In past years a cold winter cleared the air. Now the allergies are a problem all year long.

It's already causing problems. Coral reefs are depleting or "bleaching" at never before seen rates. Our weather is wacky. Polar ice is melting.
